A wall bracket is a T-shaped metal piece used to hang a sign, flag, or banner. Some kinds of wall bracket have a flat portion along the central line of the T-shape, or may be triangular in shape, and can be used to support shelves.
Wall brackets are commonly used to hang outdoor signs, such as a house number sign. They're perceived as having "old-world" charm due to the fact that many businesses, before the industrial era, would hang hand-painted signs outside their door to indicate where the point of entry was and what type of service or sales they provided.
Varieties of Wall Brackets
There are as many different styles of wall bracket as there are different types of house number sign. The wall bracket you need depends on whether the house number sign in question is a landscape house number sign, or a portrait house number sign. For those who may be unfamiliar with the terms, "landscape" refers to a picture that is meant to be shown horizontally (for example, the view of a city at night), whereas "portrait" refers to a picture that is meant to be shown vertically (for example, a painting of the Prime Minister of England).
Additionally, depending on the particular style of the house number plaque being hanged, you might prefer a wall bracket to match. Wall brackets are often available both plain and with ornate scrollwork along the top of the central line. It may be as simple as a single spiraling line or tendril of ivy, but if it echoes graphic elements or adds wordplay to your house number sign, then it's a winner.
How to Hang a Wall Bracket and House Number Sign
So you've selected your bracket of choice and now you wish to hang your new house sign. Excellent.
You may need top hooks or S hooks to attach the house number sign to the eye bolts on your wall bracket. These may come with the purchase of the wall bracket or the house number sign, or you might need to buy them yourself. They can easily be found at any hardware store.
As previously stated, a wall bracket is T-shaped. It is attached to the outside wall of your home, wherever you like, by nailing the top line of the T to the outside wall. The central line of the T is the bar from which your house number sign is hanged. Wall brackets usually come with holes pre-made for this purpose.
The first step is to hang the wall bracket. Simply nail or screw the bracket to the exterior wall, making sure to keep it level. Then, thread the hooks on the house number sign through the eye bolts of the bracket, one at a time.
Now you have a lovely home sign to direct guests and delivery people to the proper entrance!
